A preposition is a word governing, and usually coming in front of, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element.
A preposition sits in front of (is “pre-positioned” before) its object.
There are 2 types of preposition:
a) Preposition of position or direction:
- There is a sidewalk above the hill.
- Amin stands beside Diane.
b) Preposition of time.
- She left before breakfast
- They lived there since 1998.
